Dance Styles Offered
Waltz
With its characteristic “rise & fall action”, the Waltz glides around the dance floor to 3/4 time music. It is one of 4 dances using the “box step” as the basic step.
Foxtrot
Named after Vaudevillian Harry Fox, the Foxtrot shares some similarities with Waltz. Gliding around the room to 4/4 music, the Foxtrot also uses some “rise & fall” action as well as a “box step” as one of its basic steps.
Tango
Hailing from Argentina, the Tango evolved out of the melancholic yet captivating music of the turn-of-the-century immigrants. By the 1920s, it had swept the world. The dance has a very dramatic feel & the steps are defined by a “Tango Close” that completes most of the basic patterns.
East Coast Swing
Swing is a very fun & upbeat dance first popularized in the 1930s. It’s a very versatile dance with lots of patterns & room for variations. Because of its versatility, it has enjoyed a long popularity & can be danced to Big Band music, Rock & Roll music of the 50s & 60s, Country/Western, & even music of today.
Night Club Two-Step
A very versatile dance having two basic steps, the Night Club Two-Step can be danced on a small nightclub dance floor or glide across a large ballroom floor. Created to dance to ballads, it has a relaxed, casual, natural feeling.
Salsa
Though Salsa music ranges in speed, it is generally a lively, quick-paced dance with lots of spins for the follower & a variety of patterns. Because it is a Latin dance, Salsa uses “Cuban Motion” (hip action), but it is not as pronounced as in the slower Latin dances.
Rumba
Sometimes called the “dance of love”, Rumba is distinguished by its romantic feel & is one of four dances whose basic step is the “box step”. Perhaps its most important characteristic is continuous flowing “Cuban Motion” (hip action), which gives Rumba its sensual look.
Cha Cha
Related to Mambo & Salsa but not as fast, Cha Cha is a lively & fun dance that uses “triple steps” & emphasizes “Cuban Motion” (hip action).
